Save on Playdough

For the first time today, I made homemade play dough with the children.  They had fun helping me measure, stir and smoosh the play dough.

I seriously don't know why I haven't done this before.  It is super easy and the kids enjoyed helping to make it and then play with it.  My children can seriously play with this for hours at a time, which really helps me to get the much needed housework done.

I used the recipe I found here

Ingredients:

2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)
food coloring

You put this all together (minus the food coloring) in a pan and then cook it on low while stirring until it clumps together and isn't sticky anymore.  Then you add the food coloring and mash it up.  I would recommend wearing gloves if you have them.  I actually, put it in a gallon sized baggie and mashed it up that way to get the food coloring mixed in.  The kids especially liked this part.

They also stated on the website that you can use cookie cutters to cut out designs to make ornaments and then you can bake them in the oven at 300 degrees for 30 minutes.  I think the kids and I will try this out this year.  We love to give ornaments for gifts and this would be a cheap, easy, and fun gift to give!

Another thing they said you could do was to bake these in rings and you can give use them as salt licks for your pet rabbits.  How is that for saving some extra money!  : )

FYI - Their kids snow boots are awesome.  I have a son that seriously can go through a couple pairs of boots in one winter, so I bought the Lands' End boots and they lasted all winter long, and have enough life left in them to pass them down!!  Now that is quality!!!

Elmer's CraftBond and X-ACTO Products

I was so excited when I got the mail this morning.  My BzzAgent Kit for Elmer's Craftbond and
X-ACTO products had arrived.  I have been eagerly awaiting this package.

You can see in the above picture all that I received to try.  I have yet to try them in making crafts, as I just received them, but I can't wait to try them out.

My first impression of these items is that they are great quality, easy to use and I will have a blast using them with my children to make Halloween crafts! I will post pictures once we get making them.

One of the nice things about these items is that I can get them at my local Walmart.  We live in a rural community, so there aren't many stores around, but WalMart is fairly close so I won't have to travel to far to get them when needed.

If you want to check them out head to Walmart.  If you need ideas on what to make with them you can check out the Elmer's Club to get ideas.  They will send you free samples, craft project ideas and inspiration, exclusive newsletters, special offers, and new product news!

Mega Swagbucks Day

Today is Mega Swagbucks Day.

Swagbucks is a website that allows you to earn "Swagbucks" which you can use to purchase different items.  I personally redeem mine for Amazon gift cards.  I have only been a member for a couple of months and have already earned over $20.00 in gift cards and I haven't spent any money to earn them either.  That is the cool part.

All I do is search through their sight a couple times a day to earn Swagbucks, fill out their surveys (if you qualify), and if you choose you can do some of their offers.  (some are free others require you to purchase items)

On Fridays it is Mega Swagbucks Day, which means that you can earn more Swagbucks for searches than on normal days!!!

Go check it out and see what you think!  It is an easy way to earn money for the Holiday!

Freecycle

Do you have items that are laying around your house that you no longer need, but they are still in good condition that you don't want to throw them away?

Well, you can always drive them to the  thrift shop or you could list them on craiglist to make a few extra bucks, or you could list them on Freecycle.

What is Freecycle?  It is is a nonprofit movement of people who are giving and getting items for free.  It is all about keeping items out of the landfill and reusing items.  Freecycle is made up of 4,863 groups with 7,610,889 members around the world.   Membership is FREE!

I love freecycle.  I have gotten rid of many items on Freecycle as well as have picked up some much needed items for FREE with this website.  It is like a treasure hunt, and I love treasure hunts.  As the old saying goes one man's trash is anothers  treasure!

Go check it out and let me know what you think.  http://www.freecycle.org/

SITS Back to Blogging day four -  "Why I blog."

I am fairly new at blogging and I decided to start to blog to share with my family and friends the deals I was finding and how I was saving money.  I wanted to share my findings to help them reduce their bills and live more frugal.

I love to read others blogs, which give me inspiration for my blog.  I know that my blog will continue to grow and evolve.  I would like to make it a little more personal.   I love having followers and reading comments.  It is so exciting to know that someone is reading your blog and hopefully finds it interesting and helpful.

I hope that everyone will stick with me on my journey and watch as this blog evolves into what it is meant to be!

Back to Blogging with SITS - Day 4

SITS Back to Blogging day four -  "Write about a woman that inspires you."

*****

One of the women who inspire me is  my mother.

I can just see it now when she reads this - she won't believe her eyes.  You see, our family isn't that affectionate of a family.  Sure we all love each other and we know that and we would do anything for each other, but we just have a hard time actually speaking affectionately and letting people know how we feel.  I am really guilty of that.  I do not have a hard time letting my husband or children know how I feel about them, but my sisters and parents are a different story.  I don't know why that is.

My mother is the type that is as strong as a rock.  Sure she has her moments of weakness, but she doesn't like to show others those moments.  Almost two years ago my father had a stroke which through my parent's lives into a whirlwind.  He was no longer able to work, he was in and out of the hospital so much, he lost most of his sight in one eye, his short term memory is messed up, he just isn't able to do everything he used to do.  Through all this my mother was a rock.  She took things in stride, she never gave up on her faith even when they were struggling financially and my dad was in and out of the hospital.  She stood right beside him and did the best she could.  One tough woman!

Not only does my mother do so much for my father, she also helps significantly with my sisters and myself.  There is hardly a time that she says no to us when we ask a favor of her, either it be watching our kids, going shopping with us, running errands for us, or what not.  We know that she will always try to help us out.  She does a lot of it without complaint.   Too much of the time I feel that we dont' tell her thanks enough.  She is a lifesaver to us at times!

Sometimes I think, wow my mother just says yes or ok without even making a fuss about it, she just does it.  Why can't I be like that more.  I always seem to have to think about things first or complain about them.  I wish I could just say yes and leave it at that.

There is so many other things that my mother does that inspires me, this is just a few examples.   I hope I can everything for my children my mother has done for us, even without much thanks from us.

Since I know you will read this MOM - Thanks for being you!

30 Day Shred - Day 4

Day 4 - not much different than day 3.  Still sore, still having to push myself to exercise, but I am still completing it.   Yeah me!  I will have to see what the scale says on Saturday.

How about all of you?  How is it going.

30 Day Shred - Day 3

Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred

Day 3 was a little harder.  I really wanted to call it quits.  I guess I need to find the motivation to continue on.  I keep thinking come on, you like it when you are losing weight, and have more energy.  You also really like it when you try on your clothes and they are loose.  So, I pushed through and completed today's workout.

I still am sore, but it is getting better.  Still don't look forward to the push-ups, but I do them.  I can only get stronger if I do them.

How is it going for all of  you?   I hope you are sticking with it.  Together we can achieve our goals.

30 Day Shred - Day 2

Jillian Michaels - 30 Day Shred

What can I say about day 2.  I am sore!!!  30 Day Shred is kicking my butt.

My alarm clock went off this morning, I shut it off, and laid there.   Yes, I admit it I didn't get up early to exercise today.  I did exercise though, just not first thing this morning.  I decided to try to exercise during the children's nap time today.  I think I need to kick myself in the butt and get out of bed earlier tomorrow.

It was nice to sleep in, but doing it first thing and getting it done with for the day is much easier for me.  It is nice to know that it is done with and I can cross it off my to do list for the day.

I do have to say that I feel so much better after exercising. I seem to be in a better mood and have more energy.  Now, I just need to tackle eating better!

How was your day 2?

Back to Blogging with SITS - Day 2

SITS Back to Blogging day two. "Re-upload a post you wish more people had read and explain why it was important to you."

I don't have too many personal posts on my blog yet.  So, this is one of the few that I have that I hope people will read and like.

********

Almost 2 years ago, my husband and I decided that I would stay home with the children so we didn't have to send them to daycare. Let me tell you this was a huge decision that we didn't take lightly. We prayed and talked about it so much. We decided to take the leap and put our trust in God.

I am happy to say that things are working out for us. Sure I am not just sitting at home with my children, I do have to supplement my income. (small farming just doesn't pay all the bills) I run a daycare out of my house, this allows me to be home with my children and still make an income.

We also have done the following to help reduce the amount we spend.

1) Shop at Garage Sale or Thrift Stores. I can't tell you how fun it is to go to garage sales and thrift shops. There are so many treasures just waiting to be found there. There are so many great deals as well. I recently found Disney movies for my children for $0.50 each. I can't beat that. Sure they are videos and not DVDs, but I don't mind and my children sure don't mind. One of the local thrift shops have 1/2 off on Friday, making some sweet deals. You can get clothes for $0.13!!!

2) Have a garage sale. I not only love to go to garage sales, but I love to have garage sales myself. It may be a lot of work to set up, but it is worth it. I can clean out my house every Summer and still find more items for next Summer's garage sale.

3) Eat out Less. I know that it is hard sometimes when you work 40 plus hours a week to find the desire to cook. Trust me I know, I am not too fond of cooking. I am making every attempt to find ways to simplify cooking. I look for easy recipes on line and am trying to start to batch cook and freezing meals for the days I really don't feel like cooking, which is rather often.

4) Take your lunch to Work. Just like eating out for supper, you can save money by taking your lunch to work with you. Just make a little extra at supper time and eat it for lunch the next day.

5) Stop paying for TV. We decided to drop cable/satellite and go with just the free channels you can get through the air. Sure it takes a little time to adjust, but actually we were watching most of the prime time shows anyway that you can get FREE. We have a public television channel that provides educational cartoons throughout the day for the children when they get to watch TV. When you stop paying for TV, you find you have extra time for family time, because you all aren't glued to the TV!

6) Car pool to work or use public transportation. When I used to commute to work, I would carpool with others from my town. It sure saved a lot of money and wear and tear on my car. It also allowed me to make new friends and it was a way for me to unwind on the drive home. I had the option when I wasn't driving to either just sit quietly or to talk with other adults about my day and problems. It was so nice to unwind that way, when I got home I was more relaxed and ready to enjoy time with the family.

7) Stop Smoking/Drinking. I know this is probably easier said than done. I am lucky that I don't smoke and since I am breastfeeding I don't drink. I never really drank before breastfeeding either though. I do know people who do both and it is so expensive. I can't believe how much a pack of cigarettes cost! If you do smoke, you may want to talk to your doctor or employer and your insurance may cover the cost to help you quit smoking!

8) Stay Home. I know it might not sound all that fun, but you can save money by just staying home and having fun. If you do want to get out, which of course you should every once in awhile, then find free entertainment. The local news channel post weekend events in our area and they generally have free events listed. You can always go on a hike/bike ride, go fishing, have a picnic, camp in the backyard or at a friends house, have a cookout with friends, invite friends to a movie night. The possibilities are endless, just do some searching on the Internet and you would be amaze.

9) Sun dry clothes. In the summertime I love to hang my clothes out on the line. It may take a little extra time, but it is so worth it. Not only does it save energy, which saves money, but they smell so good too. In the winter time I have some indoor clothes lines that I set up to dry clothes on. I also did invest in a energy efficient front load washing machine to help save money.

10) Clip coupons. Check out my site to see how you can save with coupons as I post deals at the local stores. Many people think that clipping coupons isn't worth it. They couldn't be more wrong. I know that it does take some time, but once you have a system set up and get used to using them, you can be amazed at the deals you can get and how you can reduce your grocery bill.

11) Have a garden. I look forward to our garden every year. I love the fresh vegetables we are able to get from it. I am even more thankful that my children seem to like the vegetables as well, unlike me when I was their age. We are lucky to have fresh vegetables every night for supper and we are able to freeze/can the extra to use later in the winter months. This helps with the grocery bill as well.

12) Purchase your meat/eggs from a local farmer. This might not always save you money, but you will at least know where your meat/eggs are coming from. Farm fresh eggs from free range chickens are so good, you can notice the difference from the store bought eggs when you crack them open. I am so lucky to have the farm for fresh meat and eggs.

These are just some examples of things you can do to cut back on expenses and start living frugal. Please share what you and your family have done to live more frugal.

30 Day Shred - Day 1

Today was the first morning of the 30 Day shred.  I have attempted to do this program before, so I knew a little of what to expect.  I have never completed the program, so I am looking forward to having the support and determination to finish it this time.  As well as I really want to lose weight and increase my stamina.

The really hard part for me today was finding the strength to get up early to exercise.  I actually accomplished this today and it felt good.  The exercises were easy to do, but you could feel your body working.  I especially have a difficult time with the push-ups, but with time hopefully will be able to master them.

Now, onto day 2 - lets see if I have the energy to get up early tomorrow!

SITS Back to Blogging day one. "Re-upload the first post you ever wrote on your blog.

My very first post with some revamps.

**********

Frugal Living - can I do it? I would like to say that I have been living pretty frugal all my life. However, since I have quit work to stay at home with my family, I need to find how to live even more frugal. I have ventured onto many blogs that point out coupons, deals, tips, ideas, recipes, and many other wonderful things that have saved me some money, and made my life a tad bit easier. I am not sure yet how my blog will continue to evolve, so I hope you stick around for the ride and help me to shape our blog!

So, I thought I would create my own blog to share deals and what nots I find with family, friends, and readers. Who doesn't like getting a good deal!

I was raised to look for the deals and to head to the clearance racks at the store. When I was a child, I didn't think that was too cool, but now as a SAHM of three and married to a farmer - I love DEALS.

I hope you find this blog useful as well as entertaining. If you have any suggestions for it please let me know.

Happy Deal Hunting!
